A Few Hot Driver Choices for 2022
I had a chance to build a bunch of drivers for customers in February and found some great combinations of shafts and clubheads that fit a wide range of golfers.
The first driver is designed to help slicers keep the ball in play. The 2nd driver is a lightweight bomber that offers additional length off the tee for low, mid, and high handicappers, and the 3rd driver is designed to help very slow swingers pick up lost distance off the tee.
Above is the new Tour Edge Hot Launch E522 Offset clubhead. They sell it as “the easiest club you’ll ever hit” and I agree.
The E522 design has a bit of an offset that works with a heavy heel weight to help close the face on the driver for straighter shots.
They’ve upgraded the face with their new Diamond Face 2.0. This new face design produces a hotter face with faster ball speeds and better performance on off-center hits, as well as reduced spin.
I can offer their standard shaft choice or I can buy the heads to build you a custom driver with the E522. It’s available in 10.5, 12, and a 15.5 degree high launch design.
The price with a Mitsubishi lightweight shaft is $250.
The price to supercharge it with a Wave shaft is only $50 more… $300 for added distance in a clubhead design that will help take away the right side of the fairway for you.

Hiskei Boyka Driver
My second driver for 2022 is the Hiskei Boyka with either a Hiskei Superlight or the Hiskei Wave shaft.
The Boyka driver head is a lightweight design built for raw distance (Boyka is the star of an Asian martial arts movie).
It is a stunning looking clubhead that comes with a choice of either a matt black color treatment or an Asian favorite gold plated face/sole look.
The clubhead is only 193 grams so it has to be built to at least 46” to get a normal swingweight (remember 46” is now maximum to be conforming). It performs great with the Hiskei 45 gram superlight shaft or a Wave shaft.
Combined with the Hiskei superlight you’ll have a club that is 10% lighter than standard clubs. This will help increase your swingspeed for added distance and less fatigue at the end of a round.
The price with the Superlight is $350. I’ve seen other premium lightweight drivers go for $600-$700.
I also like the Boyka with the distance enhancing Wave shaft. ($399 with the Wave). As our friends from MyGolfSpy found out in their review, the Wave shaft added about 6 yards vs. their control shaft and reduced distance from the target line by nearly 3 yards.
If you’d like to build your own the clubhead is $199 and includes a nice headcover. The Superlight shaft is $110 and the Wave shaft is $150.
Send me a note to order. I can also build with your choice about any shaft made.
Krank Formula XX Driver
The third choice is the Krank Formula XX driver with either the Hiskei Superlight or the Wave shaft.
The Krank driver is built to be fit by swingspeed and I really like the XX version that is made for swingspeeds from 60 mph-80 mph or so. It has a super thin high COR face that helps slow swinging seniors and women golfers pick up lost distance.
It’s available in 9, 10.5, 12, and 14 degree lofts adjustable -1 degree and +2 degree. I really like this one with the Wave shaft which helps add a bit more distance on top of the distance gain with the super flexible trampoline club face.
Price is $399 with the Wave shaft upgrade.
The Krank head has a more traditional weight so it can be built to 45”-45.5” if you have trouble controlling a longer club.

Graman Graphite Shafts
I love Graman golf shafts. They’re built with expensive materials and have specs and a price point that the premium shaft brands can only dream about.
They still make the internet favorite “Limey” shaft. The Limey UL540 is 75 grams and only 2.4 torque, great for you heavy hitters. Price is $80. The Limey 640 is 65 grams and 3.0 torque and priced at $125. Raw length is 47” and it comes in a day-glo green paint treatment.
They make a G series shaft (that replaced the Limey) in a G55 (55g, 3.0 torque) model that is $99 in R or S flex or a G60 series that is 60g and 3.3 torque for $59. They both feature a mid-low kick point for a bit higher launch. The G Series has a more traditional silver paint treatment.
I can also build the above drivers with the Graman shafts. Send me a note to order.
Star Grips
I’m featuring the excellent Star Grips in my driver builds for 2022. They’ve upgraded to a tackier feeling material and come in the Sidewinder, Tour, Tour Mid, and Smoothee models. I have prices, pictures, and descriptions of the Star grips here.
The Star grips are the most durable grips you can buy. I’ve had them last years in my clubs.
I can fit quite a few in a USPS flat rate shipping box for about $10 so stock up for the spring golf season! Send me a note to order.
Classic Clubs
I got a nice note from a Clubmaker Report reader looking for someone who enjoys repairing old classic clubs. He sent me quite a list of clubs he’s been saving/collecting. I think he’s offering them up at a very attractive price, some probably free. Send me a note and I’ll pass along the list and his email.
Golf Club Resale Exchange
On a similar note, many (most) of you have a garage full of clubs and shafts you’ve tried and can’t bare to get rid of. Your wives have contacted me and I’m thinking setting up a page where I’d facilitate the exchange, keeping it among Clubmaker Report readers. Probably charge some sort of percentage like a virtual consignment shop. What do you think? Send me a note.
